NTU's Blogging Rule/Burning the Quran

/EDIT/: I wrote this on a particularly stupid day. My younger self is stupid. Read at own risk (I disclaim all inaccuracies on the ground that asdfghjk I was an immature kid at that time.

I just went on msn (it automatically opens when I switch on the computer) and I read this insane article about NTU's new blogging rule, which apparently expects students who create webpages or blogs containing information regarding politics and religion to acquire proper licences from the Media Development Authority and the university’s written approval.

Which is stupid. Face it.

Quote from the article: "The email was sent on Tuesday to all students with the subject title, Message on Exercising Freedom of Expression Responsibly, in block letters."

Another quote: "No matter what you post online, and no matter how you defend it or even retract it later, students have to take responsibility for what they say," she said. Last week, a blogger posted about foreign students he accused of not contributing to group projects and, in some cases, copying the work of other students. The anonymous author, who identified the students and posted their photos, has since removed the blog."

This is crazy. I mean, the person who blogged about the foreign students was kind of asking for it, since he did put the names and photos up. Yes, photos. Ranting about this stupid person A or stupid person B is fine and all, but posting the photos and names?

Insane. And the student said that "No matter what you post online, and no matter how you defend it or even retract it later, students have to take responsibility for what they say". That's fine and all. Hey, I applaud that, but it just seems like a weak excuse to implement the new rule.

Because the way I see it, people can learn the easy way or the hard way, and certain people learn better from experience. Implementing this rule is just... stifling free speech, making things harder for all students and administrators, and pissing off a whole lot of people.

The September 11 attacks: (From Wiki) "a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001." The 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. They also crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There were no survivors from any of the flights.

Okay. A lot of deaths, and the Americans were understandably pissed off/hysterical/whatever, since the death toll of the attacks was 2,996, including the 19 hijackers.

But now one of them, Rev. Terry Jones, plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.

This is his lame excuse: "Jones, who is known for posting signs proclaiming that Islam is the devil's religion, says the Constitution gives him the right to publicly set fire to the book that Muslims consider the word of God."

Some people just don't understand that not all Muslims are to blame for the 9/11 attacks. Some are simply self-delusional. Like that Rev. Thinking about him makes me feel sick. How can someone (a reverend, no less) condemn the entirety of a religion just because some of the extremists took it a lot too far?

And burning someone else's holy book? Does he want another attack? Does he want every single Muslim (who previously had no reason whatsoever) to hate Christianity? "The Quran, according to Jones, is "evil" because it espouses something other than biblical truth and incites radical, violent behavior among Muslims."

A bit too narrow-minded, is what I think of him. Does the Bible not tell people to forgive? Something about seven and seventy-seven (forgive someone no matter how many times he pisses you off) and you judge yourself when you judge others? We've moved on to selectively using the bible now, have we? (Not that I'm a Christian, but seeing as HE is a Christian...)

How low can that man sink? I abhor people like him
